Early Life and Education
Sarah Pick was born on August 13, 1921, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was the youngest of nine children in a devout Catholic family. From a young age, she displayed a keen intelligence and a strong sense of empathy.
Pick attended St. Joseph's Academy in Des Moines, where she excelled in her studies. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree in sociology from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. After graduating, she worked as a social worker in Chicago before entering the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1946.
A Call to Serve
As a nun, Pick dedicated herself to serving the poor and underprivileged. She worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, where she witnessed firsthand the disparities in healthcare access for the poor. This experience ignited a passion within her to advocate for change.
In 1963, Pick earned her master's degree in nursing from Catholic University of America. She returned to Sioux City and became the director of nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital. In this role, she implemented innovative programs to improve the quality of care for all patients, regardless of their economic status.
Advocacy for Social Justice
Pick's advocacy extended beyond the walls of the hospital. She became involved in the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement. She marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and spoke out against poverty and injustice.
In 1972, Pick was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives. She served two terms, during which she sponsored legislation to expand access to healthcare, affordable housing, and education for low-income Iowans.
A Pioneer in Healthcare
Pick's work in healthcare was groundbreaking. She established the first nurse practitioner program in Iowa and helped to develop the first national standards for nurse practitioners.
She also founded the Institute for Health Policy Studies, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality and accessibility of healthcare for all. Through her work, Pick paved the way for nurses to play a more active role in healthcare delivery and policymaking.
A Legacy of Compassion and Advocacy
Sarah Pick retired from public life in 1998. She continued to advocate for social justice and healthcare reform until her death in 2013. She left behind a legacy of compassion, advocacy, and tireless service to others.
Sister Sarah Pick is remembered as a pioneer in healthcare and a tireless advocate for the poor and marginalized. Her unwavering commitment to social justice has inspired countless others to follow in her footsteps.
