The authors argue that sanctions are most effective when they are used as part of a broader grand strategy that includes other tools of statecraft, such as diplomacy, military force, and economic statecraft. They also argue that sanctions are most likely to be successful when they are targeted at specific individuals or entities, rather than entire countries.
The book provides a detailed case study of the use of sanctions against Iran. The authors argue that sanctions were a key factor in bringing Iran to the negotiating table and ultimately reaching a nuclear deal. However, they also caution that sanctions are not a magic bullet, and that they can have unintended consequences.
The book concludes by offering a set of recommendations for the use of sanctions in grand strategy. The authors argue that sanctions should be used sparingly, and only as part of a broader grand strategy. They also argue that sanctions should be targeted at specific individuals or entities, and that they should be designed to minimize unintended consequences.
