The following is an account of the experiences of a cavalryman in the Civil War, serving in Custer's Michigan Cavalry Brigade. It was written by the cavalryman himself, and provides a detailed and vivid account of his experiences in the war, including battles, raids, and camp life. It also provides insights into the character of General Custer himself.

I enlisted in the Union Army in the spring of 1861, at the outbreak of the Civil War. I was assigned to the 5th Michigan Cavalry Regiment, which was part of Custer's Michigan Cavalry Brigade. The brigade was commanded by Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer, who was one of the most famous and successful cavalry commanders in the Union Army.

The 5th Michigan Cavalry Regiment was a hard-fighting unit, and we saw a lot of action during the war. We fought in many of the major battles of the war, including the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of the Wilderness. We also participated in many raids and skirmishes, and we were always on the move.

One of the most memorable experiences of my time in the war was the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle was fought over three days, and we were heavily engaged in the fighting. We fought dismounted, using our carbines as infantry. The battle was a bloody and costly one, but we were victorious in the end.

Another memorable experience was the raid on Richmond, Virginia. The raid was led by General Custer, and we rode for days and nights, covering hundreds of miles. We fought our way through Confederate lines, and we even captured the Confederate capital for a few hours. The raid was a daring and successful one, and it helped to demoralize the Confederate Army.

In addition to the battles and raids, I also spent a lot of time in camp. Camp life was often boring and monotonous, but it was also a time for rest and relaxation. We would often play cards, sing songs, and tell stories. We also spent a lot of time cleaning our weapons and equipment, and preparing for the next battle.

General Custer was a demanding and strict commander, but he was also a brilliant tactician and a courageous leader. He was always leading from the front, and he inspired his men to fight hard. He was also a fair and just commander, and he always looked out for the welfare of his men.

I am proud to have served in Custer's Michigan Cavalry Brigade. We were a hard-fighting unit, and we played a significant role in the Union victory in the Civil War. I am also grateful for the opportunity to have served under General Custer. He was a great commander, and I learned a lot from him.

The following are some of the battles and raids in which the 5th Michigan Cavalry Regiment participated:

  • Battle of Gettysburg
  • Battle of Antietam
  • Battle of the Wilderness
  • Raid on Richmond, Virginia
  • Battle of Trevilian Station
  • Battle of Yellow Tavern
  • Battle of Five Forks
  • Battle of Appomattox Court House

I hope that you have enjoyed this account of my experiences in the Civil War. I am proud to have served my country, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared my story with you.

Thank you for reading.

Sincerely,

A Cavalryman with Custer's Michigan Cavalry Brigade
