Early Life and Education
Helen Ring was born on February 22, 1868, in New Lisbon, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of a farmer and a schoolteacher. Robinson attended the University of Denver and graduated with a degree in law in 1892. She was one of the first women to earn a law degree in Colorado.
Legal Career and Activism
After graduating from law school, Robinson opened a law practice in Denver. She quickly became involved in the women's suffrage movement. In 1893, she helped to found the Colorado Equal Suffrage Association. Robinson was a gifted orator and a persuasive advocate for women's rights. She traveled throughout the state, speaking at rallies and organizing support for women's suffrage.
Political Career
In 1912, Robinson was elected to the Colorado State Senate. She was the first woman to serve in the Colorado legislature. In the Senate, Robinson introduced several bills to improve the lives of women and children. She also worked to pass a bill that would have granted women the right to vote in Colorado. However, the bill was defeated by a narrow margin.
Women's Suffrage Victory
In 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote nationwide. Robinson played a key role in securing the passage of the amendment in Colorado. She worked tirelessly to educate voters and rally support for women's suffrage.
Later Life and Legacy
After the passage of the 19th Amendment, Robinson continued to be active in politics and social reform. She served on the Denver City Council and was a member of the Colorado State Board of Education. Robinson died in Denver on February 15, 1952.
