Bearded dragons are popular pet reptiles because they are relatively easy to care for and have a docile temperament. However, it is important to do your research before you bring a bearded dragon home to make sure you can provide it with the proper care. This guide will provide you with all the information you need to know about bearded dragon care, from setup to nutrition.

Setup

Cage

The first thing you need to do is purchase a cage for your bearded dragon. The cage should be at least 40 gallons in size and have a secure lid. It should also have good ventilation and be easy to clean.

Substrate

The substrate is the material that you put on the bottom of the cage. There are a variety of different substrates available, but some of the most popular options include sand, reptile carpet, and paper towels.

Heating

Bearded dragons are ectothermic, which means that they rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. You will need to provide your bearded dragon with a basking spot that is between 95 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit. You can create a basking spot by using a heat lamp or a ceramic heat emitter.

Lighting

Bearded dragons also need access to UVB lighting. UVB lighting helps reptiles absorb calcium, which is essential for their bone health. You can provide your bearded dragon with UVB lighting by using a UVB bulb or a UVB tube.

Diet

Bearded dragons are omnivores, which means that they eat both plants and animals. The majority of their diet should consist of live food, such as crickets, mealworms, and dubia roaches. You can also offer your bearded dragon a variety of greens, such as collard greens, dandelion greens, and romaine lettuce. Bearded dragons can also eat some fruits, such as apples, bananas, and berries.

Supplements

Bearded dragons need to be supplemented with calcium and vitamin D3. You can purchase these supplements at your local pet store.

Veterinary Care

It is important to take your bearded dragon to the veterinarian for regular checkups. Your veterinarian can help you monitor your bearded dragon's health and make sure it is getting the proper care.

Bearded dragons can make great pets for people of all ages. However, it is important to do your research before you bring a bearded dragon home to make sure you can provide it with the proper care. This guide has provided you with all the information you need to know about bearded dragon care, from setup to nutrition.
